What Triphala is

Triphala is one of the best-known Ayurvedic formulations. It combines three dried fruits: amalaki (Emblica officinalis), bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) and haritaki (Terminalia chebula).

Traditionally it is used for digestion and regular bowel movements, and as a general tonic (rasayana). Research on it in people is limited, and it should be thought of as a herbal product with effects — and possible side effects — of its own.

At night

The most common traditional practice is to take Triphala in the evening, some time before bed, with warm water. Taken this way it is used mainly for its mild laxative effect, aiming for a bowel movement the next morning.

In the morning

Some Ayurvedic practitioners suggest it in the morning on an empty stomach, as a tonic rather than for the bowels. Which timing suits you depends on why you are taking it, and is worth deciding with a practitioner.

How much to take depends on the product and on you. Follow the label or your doctor's advice rather than a general guide, and start low.

Before you start

Buy from a licensed manufacturer. Some Ayurvedic products sold online have been found to contain lead, mercury or arsenic.

If you take other medicines, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether to space them apart from Triphala, and tell your other doctors you are taking it.

  • Avoid it in pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise.
  • Do not give it to children without a doctor's advice.
  • Stop if you get diarrhoea or stomach cramps.

When to see a doctor

  • Constipation that lasts more than a few weeks, or a lasting change in your bowel habit.
  • Blood in your stools, black stools, or losing weight without trying.
  • Tummy pain that is severe or does not go away.

Common questions

Can I take Triphala every day?

Some people take it daily for a period, but long-term use is best agreed with a practitioner who knows your history. Relying on any laxative for weeks is a reason to look for the cause of the constipation.

Is Triphala safe during pregnancy?

Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your doctor specifically advises it.
