What grade 1 fatty liver means
Fatty liver means extra fat has built up in liver cells. On an ultrasound report, "grade 1" describes a mild increase in brightness of the liver — the earliest grade the scan can show. It is very common, and often found by chance.
When it is not caused by alcohol, it is called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), now also called MASLD. It is closely linked with being overweight, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
What helps, according to the evidence
The changes with the strongest evidence are the everyday ones: losing weight if you are overweight, a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and cutting down on alcohol. These can reduce liver fat and stop it getting worse.
Your own doctor may also check your blood sugar, cholesterol and liver blood tests, because looking after these matters as much as the liver itself.
Where Ayurveda fits
Ayurveda links the liver (yakrit) to digestion and metabolism, and an Ayurvedic plan for fatty liver usually centres on diet, meal timing, activity and routine — the same areas the evidence points to. That is where an Ayurvedic consultation can genuinely support the changes your doctor recommends.
Be careful with "liver detox" herbs. Herbal and dietary supplements are a recognised cause of liver injury. Take nothing for your liver without your doctor knowing, buy only from licensed manufacturers, and keep having your liver tests checked.
When to see a doctor
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or itching all over.
- Swelling of the tummy or legs, or vomiting blood.
- Feeling very tired with pain in the upper right of the tummy.
- Liver blood tests that are rising — see your own doctor regularly.
In an emergency call 112 in India, or your local emergency number.
Common questions
Can grade 1 fatty liver go away?
For many people, liver fat falls with weight loss, a healthier diet, more activity and less alcohol. A repeat scan or blood tests with your own doctor show whether it has improved. No herb or product can promise it.
Are Ayurvedic liver herbs safe?
Not automatically. Some herbal products have caused liver injury, and quality varies. Use them only with your doctor's knowledge, and keep up your liver blood tests.
